What happened to big AI companies’ CO₂ promises

Big AI companies are struggling to keep their CO₂ promises.

Not because they don’t care.

But because AI is breaking their assumptions.

For years, big tech companies were committed to aggressive climate goals, carbon neutrality, long-term sustainability, etc.

Then AI demand exploded.

And suddenly:

– Data centers started consuming far more electricity than expected

– Clean energy couldn’t scale at the same pace

– Timelines stopped making sense

So what are they doing?

They’re quietly turning to natural gas to keep up with AI growth.

Which means:

• Emissions are rising again

• Climate targets are getting pushed further away

• “Net zero” is starting to look… optimistic

The uncomfortable reality:

AI is forcing a trade-off no one anticipated at this scale.

You can either:

Slow down AI growth

Or compromise on climate commitments

Right now, companies are choosing #2.

We are entering a phase where:

Technological ambition is outpacing sustainable infrastructure

And that raises a bigger question:

If even the most resource-rich companies can’t balance AI growth with CO₂ goals…

Who can?
